A 32-year-old father, Muyiwa Ayorinde, has been arrested by police detectives for dumping his own three weeks old baby boy into a canal in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

By Dayo Johnson – Akure A 32-year-old father, Muyiwa Ayorinde, has been arrested by police detectives for dumping his own three weeks old baby boy into a canal in Akure, the Ondo state capital. But for the timely intervention of police detectives, the suspect would have been launched by irate youths. The boy who was still alive then was hidden in a black bag by his father who arrived the scene on a motorbike.

Reports had it that the baby later died in the hospital after he was rescued by sympathizers. Eyewitness account said that “Luck ran out on the father as he was spotted by one of residents at about noon while he attempted to escape after dumping his three-weeks-old baby into the canal.

“When he arrived at the side of the canal, he brought out a black bag and threw it into the canal.

“lt was the cry of the baby that attracted passerby and those who suspected his movement on arrival by the side of the canal.

“The baby was rescued after some boys jumped inside the carnal and taken to a nearby hospital. The boys later descended on the suspects and he was thoroughly beaten up.

Another eyewitness told Vanguard that “I saw the young man looking strange as he alighted from the Okada and pulled out a black bag and dropped it into the canal.

“When we heard a baby’s voice cried out. Then we knew what he had come to do. People have been coming from different places to dump things in this canal. We have to make it as a point of duty to make sure it stopped.

“This man is a wicked man to have come here to dump his own child” Thank God for the swift intervention of the security men that came around. Am sure with the kind of anger I saw on people here they would have killed him”.

Meanwhile, the suspect has been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer at the ‘B’ Division for further interrogation. One of the rescuers told vanguard that “We rescued the child and took him to a nearby hospital and thereafter handed the injured father to the police.

The state police image maker, Tee Leo lkoro said the matter had not been brought to his knowledge by the DPO in the area. (Vanguard)
